We believe sticks are for dogs to fetch
/Once upon a time, several years before I met Steve the Window Guy I bought the cutest house you ever met. It was a classic Richfield 1946 story and a half. It had a galley kitchen, arched doorways, glass doorknobs and this amazing floral wallpaper in the stairwell leading upstairs At the top of the stairs was a window. I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait until the weather warmed up enough for me to open all the windows in the house and let the fresh air flow freely.
Fast forward to spring. I methodically went through the house opening windows. When I got to the top of the stairs I opened the window and it promptly slammed shut. It startled me if we’re being honest. My heart was racing. What if I hadn’t moved my hand out of the way fast enough and it got crushed? I stared at the window with contempt and something caught my eye.
Is that a stick?
Yes. Sure enough. A stick was settled between the window panes.
I opened the window again. More gingerly this time. I reached for the stick and guess what? (I bet you already know). That stick was the perfect size and width to be strong enough to hold the window open. The former owners left me the stick.
The stick that had served the purpose of holding that window open for who knows how many years. Who knows how long ago that balancing system in the window failed. Maybe the ropes broke or the pully was tangled, or who cares because maybe after nearly 60 years it was just done.
I loved that stick. It served a purpose. It let the fresh air flow into my home I used that stick to hold up that window until I finally got it replaced. Because even though I was not yet married to a window guy I knew this to be true:
Sticks are for dogs to fetch;
not for holding up your windows.
