Argon Gas In Windows Explained

Tan windows with double-pane glass

Argon gas is an inert gas commonly used in double and triple-pane windows.

Double-pane windows consist of two glass panes while triple-pane windows consist of three. When there's a gas between them, such as argon, it helps reduce the heat that can be transferred through the glass, improving your window's insulating properties.  It is part of what makes your window energy star rated.

In this article, we'll explore how argon gas can benefit your home. But first, let's review why we use gas between window panes.

Using Gas in Windows

Gas is used as an insulator, which reduces the amount of heat transferred through the glass to improve your home's energy efficiency, leading to significant energy savings over time.

Additionally, because gas is denser than air, it helps reduce outside noise and dampen sound waves, making it more difficult for noise to enter the home

Unlike argon or krypton, another type of inert gas, air has a higher thermal conductivity, which increases the amount of heat transferred and leads to significant energy loss in your home. Additionally, air contains moisture, which can lead to condensation between the panes.

Benefits of Argon Gas in Windows

Argon gas is a commonly used insulating gas because it is non-toxic, non-flammable, and inexpensive.

One of the biggest advantages of having argon gas in double or triple-pane windows is that it helps to reduce energy costs.  As mentioned above, the gas acts as an insulator.

Simply put, in the winter, less heat is lost through your windows, and in the summer, less heat enters the home through your windows. The result is significant energy savings over time.

Argon gas has an additional advantage of reducing outside noise when it's used in triple-pane windows. The gas acts as a barrier, absorbing sound waves and making it harder for noise to enter your house. This feature is particularly beneficial for homes located near busy areas like schools or highways.

Argon vs. Krypton: What's The Difference?

Similar to argon, krypton is a type of gas and effective insulator between window panes. Because of its lower thermal conductivity, it can result in even greater energy savings than argon.

However, the cost of krypton gas is more expensive, so you'll need to work with a professional replacement window expert to decide the best option for your home and budget.

When Should You Replace Your Window?

Several warning signs can indicate it's time to replace your old windows, such as:

  • The glass of your window is foggy

  • You need a stick to hold up the window

  • There are signs of wood rot and mold

  • You see physical damage (e.g., missing locks, broken glass, etc.)

Additionally, if you notice condensation between the panes of your window, this is a sign that the seal has failed and the window may need to be replaced.

Finally, if your windows are old and worn out, and you're experiencing high energy bills, it may be more cost-effective in the long run to replace them with newer, more energy-efficient windows.
